Microdermabrasion is a facial procedure that uses manual exfoliation to remove the outer layer (epidermis) of skin that contains dead skin cells. This process works in a series to achieve the best results. Microdermabrasion treatments are great for skin rejuvenation, to reduce fine lines or wrinkles, to eliminate unwanted superficial pigmentation,

to reduce faint to moderate stretch marks and superficial scarring. Microdermabrasion is not the solution for heavily damaged skin. It is a non-invasive alternative for those who do not require more serious treatments such as laser treatments or chemical peels.

If you have uneven skin texture, sun damage and would like to improve the overall condition of your skin, you are most likely a good candidate for microdermabrasion treatments. Depending on the area treated, you will notice an improvement in your skin's appearance after your treatment. Acne scars will be less obvious. Age spots and fine lines are reduced, and many Microdermabrasion clients report that their skin seems softer, tighter, smoother and younger looking after their the first treatment.

Other skin conditions that have shown improvement with microdermabrasion treatments include:

- Hyperpigmentation

- Uneven skin tone or texture

- Reducing skin dullness (occurs with aging skin)

Keratosis Pilaris - treatments can temporarily smooth out these hard, conical forma-

tions on the pores, allowing topical treatment creams to be more effective (they look

similar to goose bumps only more permanent and are usually found on the thighs and

- Some stretch marks

Opening blackheads and keeping pores clean (microdermabrasion is not intended for

acne therapy, but improvements have been noted)

Is there any downtime after a treatment?

Microdermabrasion is a safe and gentle procedure with no downtime. The client will need to protect his or her skin with moisturizer and sun block for 48 hours after the treatment and may experience mild redness and sloughing/peeling. However, the client can return to work immediately. Though you might have some minor redness, it should not last more than a few hours. Your skin might have the sensation of either a slight

windburn or sunburn, but this feeling should pass within a few hours as well. Applying a good moisturizer will help with this.

Direct sun exposure should be avoided for at least 7 days after the treatment session. Using a good sun screen is paramount because exposure to UV rays is one of the key factors in the aging process. Alpha-Hydroxy Acid, Glycolic Acid products, and skin exfoliation scrubs should be avoided for 72 hours both before and after treatments.

Full-face make-up, such as liquid foundations or pressed powder foundations should be avoided for 3-14 hours after treatment. Eyeshadow and lipstick are safe to apply right away after treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

One treatment will not provide instant results. That is why it is important to have a series of microdermabrasion services.  Three to six are recommended for the best results. These initial 3 to 6 treatments can be spaced 2 - 3 weeks apart, and from that point, the client can continue to receive one treatment on a monthly basis for the best maintenance.
